Service Learning and the Library - Grade 5

I am very excited about a new collaboration with Ms. Laya's grade 5 service learning group. They are working on animal abuse.  This past Friday, they spent the whole day doing special investigative activities.  They had speakers and conducted various research activities. I shared 'Aviary Wonders Inc. Spring Catalog and Instruction Manual' by Kate Samworth with the group. This beautiful and creative book highlights what our world might be like if there were no birds.  I choose this book as it is a very creative response to an environmental issue.  Her book makes us think differently about threats to animals rather than directly telling us about threats.  The book provided great conversation for inspiring the students' action plans to think creatively.  
I will also work with the class to develop social media skills as we will create a Twitter account to share our process with the world. Plus, we have a global partnership with a school in Shenzhen China (Shekou International School) to discuss the different understandings and approaches to this global issue.  Thank you Meaghan Wilson for being our partner in China.
