This week, the library is supporting the school play - "I Never Saw Another Butterfly"
This Play is based on the experience of children imprisoned in Terezin, a concentration camp during the Holocaust. This camp was filled with mostly artists, musicians and scholars. The inmates were encouraged to live creative lives - but this was all a lie as the Nazi wanted to deceive the International Red Cross inspectors into believing that Jews were treated humanely. In the end, of the 144,000 Jews sent there less than 17,000 were alive at the end of the war. The play was written by Celeste Raspanti and centers around one child's story of surviving the camp. The play incorporates music/opera and a child's way of learning how to overcome horrible circumstances.
In the library you will find a display of books on the Holocaust that also includes the personal account of one Holocaust survivor, Lili Birnbaum. Grade 9 student, Alexa Kleinman recorded her grandmother's story as an interactive media presentation.
Please stop in the library to review Ms/ Birnbaum's story and to explore books on the Holocaust.
